If you've read my book BLUE then you know there's a little dog named Polio Pete who lives within its pages. He was a somewhat legendary part of the Miracle of Hickory story. But he was also real.
Anyway, tonight I'll be helping to kick-off Alamance Reads 2009, a county wide read of my book, Blue. The amazing committee has put together dynamic programs and cool displays. I can't wait to see all of it. I've heard that this statue of Polio Pete lives at May Memorial Library in Burlington, NC.
Isn't it cool that they painted him blue?
And here's the real Pete as shown in the July 4, 1944 issue of the Hickory Daily Record.
What a cute pooch! Hope you enjoy the festivities tonight!
ReplyDeleteOh Thanks, Amy!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your blogpost today.
can't wait to hear how the kickoff went! Carol
ReplyDeleteOh, my heart just stopped. Pete looks so much like our little dog, Daisy. What an wonderful way to kick things off!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's cool about Daisy. How ya doin'?
