REMEMBERING MARTHA MASON: A Life in the Rhythm of an Iron Lung

This morning, I awoke to the news that Marcha Mason has died. Martha has lived in an iron lung since getting polio at age 11 in 1948 - 61 years ago.

She not only finished elementary and high school in that iron lung; she also earned 2 college degrees. And eventually, she wrote a book about her life. She was a remarkable spirit as anyone in Lattimore, NC can tell you.

Mary Dalton a Wake Forest University Professor produced a documentary called Martha in Lattimore which portrays the special relationship that Martha enjoyed with her community.

My sympathies go out to the folks in Lattimore, North Carolina today. They, too, have a remarkable spirit!
