Amber Brown Grant

SCBWI (Society of Book Writers and Illustrators) is an international organization that provides support, training, and relationships for those of us who want to produce literature for young people.

There are lots of reasons to participate, including grants and awards!

Each year The Amber Brown Grant, in honor of Paula Danziger is awarded to 2 schools demonstrating interest and need. It provides funds for an author or illustrator to visit winning schools to spend time with students.

This year one of the 2 winning schools is Eastover Central Elementary School in Fayetteville, NC. And the author they chose to visit is me. Yay! How exciting is that?

As I understand it, Eastover Central will be given several hundred dollars worth of my books, author visit expanses will be covered, and we'll all enjoy a pizza party.  Thank you, SCBWI and to Gee Cee Addison for working out the details.

We're planning the visit for late April - should be a great time to travel.

  3. Congratulations, Joyce. They couldn't have picked a better author. What an honor!

I love Amber Brown for one important reason - when I was teaching in a failing school in the Bronx, I had a little girl in my class who loved Amber Brown book after I read one to the class, so I always made sure they were available in the classroom for her. At the end of the year, I gave them all to her - they were the first books she ever owned.

So I am very pleased that you were picked as part of the Amber Brown Grant. I know you will enchant those kids.

  4. Alex, thank you for sharing that story. Bet she's taking good care of those books wherever she is!

I am a writer today because of one special teacher who picked up on a spark in me.

Who knows what that girl will/has become because of you!

  6. Peggy, I LOVE exclamation points!! In fact, I have to intentionally delete them from comments because I have such a bad habit of using them. Thanks for the congrats and all your excitement!

  7. Congratulations Joyce! I'm so glad to hear that you're the visiting author especially since I recommended you! I wrote the winning grant for Eastover-Central Elementary. I am no longer employed there; so, the school's media specialist will coordinate with you. Congratulations again!
